About Us

My name is Kanani, and I am the owner and founder of Ono Island Sweets. I am a proud mom of three, a recent graduate with my Master’s in Exercise Science and Human Development, and a former college athlete. These days, I spend my time doing what I love, whether it’s running my candy business, creating art, or making memories with my kids. Ono Island Sweets is not just a business; it’s a piece of my heritage and heart that I am excited to share with you.

Ono Island Sweets was born from a deep craving for the flavors of home, Hawai‘i. Growing up, my grandma Reynette would make her famous ono candies for us to enjoy. Whether it was to satisfy a sweet tooth or to share at family gatherings, her treats always brought smiles and connection to our ohana. Over time, I learned how to make these candies myself, not only for my keiki but also for friends, and now I’m excited to share the authentic taste of the islands here on the mainland.

Another piece of my family’s story lives on through Papa’s Sauce, created in honor of my Papa, Keoki Borges. For years, his homemade BBQ sauce was legendary in our family. Everyone asked for the recipe, but Papa never shared, until one Christmas when he blessed me with it as a gift, passing on both his recipe and his trust. My Papa is not only the rock of our ohana, but also a proud Marine and a dedicated firefighter. To honor his legacy, and to give thanks, a portion of our profits will be donated to our local fire department.

At Ono Island Sweets, we believe food has the power to bring people together. Through every candy and every jar of sauce, we aim to share not just delicious flavors, but also the heart of Hawaiian culture, community, love, and aloha.

Mahalo for supporting our journey, and remember to always spread the aloha!
